Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
